THE CARIBBEAN

ANTIGUA

Separated by a few nautical miles, Antigua & Barbuda are part of the Lesser Antilles that lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

The economy of the islands relies mainly on tourism with several large cruise ships mooring at the port of St John’s, the capital. throughout the year. There are numerous beaches and a small central area of rainforest that harbours a few endemic species. However, there is a healthy and diverse population of birds including herons and waders living around the lagoons that are scattered throughout the islands. Two species of hummingbird can be seen feeding on nectar rich flowers - Antillean Crested and the Green Throated Carib.

The clear blue waters surrounding the island, supports a healthy and varied marine life.

TOBAGO

Tobago is the smaller of the two islands comprising the nation of Trinidad and Tobago which lies off of the northeast coast of Venezuela. It is a popular beach holiday destination but the majority of visitors appear quite oblivious of the beautiful wildlife that inhabits the island.

The Main Ridge Forest Reserve lies towards the north of the island and is the oldest protected rainforest in the world. Established in 1764 it contains numerous flora and fauna including 210 species of birds. I managed to see a number of these during my short time on the island. I recommend taking one of the field trips with Newton George - www.newtongeorge.com he is very knowledgeable and his friendly and easy going manner makes for a very enjoyable and rewarding trip.

This tropical paradise is definitely a place I would like to revisit!
