WINTER / SPRING BLOG 2021

The continuous wintry days of rain and the brief spell of snow earlier in the year are fast becoming a distant memory as the Spring flowers bloom and birds pair up with mates.

Thanks to on-line ordering we managed to maintain full bird feeders despite the ‘covid lockdown’. Thus we were rewarded with regular visits from our feathered and furry friends.

Viewings of the male and female Sparrowhawks have increased over the last few months and on some occasions have been seen in the garden several times on the same day.

Bumble bees, Tortoiseshell and Brimstone butterflies started to appear from as early as January!

A Lesser Redpoll visited our feeders recently and a female Blackcap was spotted at our bird bath - although I am not sure whether this is an early migrant or one of the few that now overwinter here.

Birds seen recently include:

Blackbird, Blackcap, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, Collared Dove, Coal Tit, Common Crow, Dunnock, Goldfinch, Feral/white Pigeon, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Green Woodpecker, House Sparrow, Jackdaw, Jay, Lesser Redpoll, Long Tailed Tit, Magpie, Robin, Song Thrush, Starling, Sparrowhawk, Stock Dove, Wood Pigeon, Wren.

Mammals and Reptiles: Bank Vole and Long-Tailed Fieldmouse.

Insects: Brimstone and Tortoiseshell Butterfly, Buff Tailed Bumblebee.
